TERRENCE BREWER
QuintEssential: The Calling, Vol. 3 (Strong Brew)

Forrest Dylan Bryant

April 2008

Hovering somewhere between a straightahead jam session and a mellow contemporary date, California guitarist Terrence Brewer’s genial third CD features the kinds of catchy, inviting grooves that play well on jazz radio. His easygoing, singing guitar tone beams on nine diverse originals, such as the toe-tapper “Blues for Katie,” while the remainder of his quintet establishes a lively drive. Other tracks may drift toward glossy R&B or explore dark modernistic corners, but Brewer’s warmth and timeless perspective provide confident cohesion throughout.
